David Stetler

Stetler spent 1967-69 on the faculty of Botany at the University of Minnesota. In 1969 he joined the Department of Biology at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH. Stetler came to the Biology Department at Virginia Tech in 1973.

As Associate Professor of Botany at Virginia Tech, his main responsibility was the coordination of the Freshman Biology Program that enrolled 600 biology majors and 1600 non-majors. He developed and made subsequent revisions to the laboratory manual for the program as well as coordinating the training of the graduate teaching assistants who conducted the labs. Stetler also taught Cytology and Electron Microscopy Techniques. He was a three-time recipient of the Sporn Award and an elected member of the Academy of Teaching Excellence. He served as Assistant Head of the Biology Department. His research interests were in the ultrastructure of plant cell development. After a few years as Interim Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, he returned to the Biology Department for several years. Then, he returned to the Arts & Sciences Dean's office to serve as Associate Dean for Academics. Stetler retired in 1998 and moved with his family to Oakland, CA.

In retirement, Stetler pursues his interests in, among other things, reading, travel, fishing and trap shooting.
