Opportunities for Students

The Barrett Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking applicants for graduate research in soil ecology and biogeochemistry. Successful applicants will develop research pertinent to:

  • the responses of soil communities and biogeochemical processes to climate variation in Antarctic Polar deserts.
  • the influence of land-use history and vegetation change on nitrogen cycling in the southern Appalachians.
  • the influence of biochar amendments on soil biology and carbon sequestration in managed ecosystems.

Individuals with previous research experience and the demonstrated ability to work independently in remote field locations are strongly desired. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary programs in the Dept. of Biological Sciences (https://www.biol.vt.edu/) and the Global Change Center (http://www.globalchange.vt.edu/affiliated-faculty/) at Virginia Tech.
